Hon. Maureen Monks (Ret.)

Hon. Maureen Monks (Ret.) was appointed to the Massachusetts Probate and Family Court in 2008 and retired in November 2023, serving as First Justice in Middlesex County for the final four and half years. Prior to her appointment to the bench, she was a partner at Butler & Monks, the Women’s Law Collective, in Cambridge for twenty-two years. She was also co-instructor of the Battered Women’s Advocacy Project at Suffolk University Law School in Boston, for more than fifteen years. As an Access to Justice Fellows, Judge Monks will work to create an additional operating site of Volunteer Lawyers Project’s Settlement and Early Resolution Volunteers (SERV) to bring no-cost, private conciliation services to self-represented litigants.
