John Montgomery is a Retired Partner at Ropes & Gray LLP where he focused on trials and appeals in a broad array of complex civil litigation matters, including cases involving securities, commercial torts, intellectual property, insurance coverage, product liability, ERISA, and regulatory matters. His appellate experience includes two successful arguments in the United States Supreme Court. John served as managing partner of Ropes & Gray from 2004 through 2012. Since his retirement as an active partner, he continues to be active in pro bono and other public interest matters.
Prior to joining Ropes & Gray in 1982, John served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He left the firm in 1990 to serve as First Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth and returned to Ropes & Gray in 1992.
John is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He is also listed in Best Lawyers in America and Who’s Who in American Law. John graduated from the University of Michigan in 1969 and from Boston College Law School in 1975.
As an Access to Justice Fellow, John will continue his work with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on the growing problem of internet sex trafficking of children. John is currently leading a team at Ropes & Gray that is preparing a lawsuit against a website operator that carries the bulk of the internet traffic in the United States advertising children for illegal commercial sex, and which thus far has been determined by the federal courts to be immune from liability under federal law.
