Hon. Keith Long is a retired Associate Justice of the Land Court, where he believes he still holds the record for the number of land use cases involving dogs, electronic surveillance, or murders. He received the Massachusetts Judges Conference Judicial Excellence Award for his service on the court and is most noted for his decisions in US Bank v. Ibanez, affirmed by the Supreme Judicial Court, which involved the securitization of mortgages and, with the cases that soon followed, led to the reform of the mortgage foreclosure process in Massachusetts.
A graduate of the University of Washington (BA, Economics), Harvard Law School (JD), and Oxford University (MSt., Law) where he is a permanent member of the Senior Common Room of St. John’s College, Oxford, Justice Long began his legal career in North Carolina and then moved to Boston where he was a litigation partner at K&L Gates LLP before being nominated and confirmed to the Land Court.
As an Access to Justice Fellow, Justice Long will partner with the Lawyers Clearinghouse and Massachusetts Land Court’s joint Tax Lien Foreclosure Legal Referral Program, which connects eligible low-income homeowners facing the loss of their homes in the foreclosure process with free legal advice from volunteer lawyers. Following the success of the Clinic’s 2023-2024 pilot year, Justice Long will work with staff, volunteers, and other Access to Justice Fellows to develop and implement volunteer attorney training and mentoring and to expand and further systemize the program.
