The Lawyers Clearinghouse co-hosted a Nonprofit Incorporation Workshop on December 5 at the Boston Public Library. Led by two nonprofit attorneys–Sue Abbott, of Goodwin Proctor and Jim Grace, executive director of the Arts & Business Council–the seminar covered important topics regarding nonprofit formation, filing for tax-exempt status with the IRS and subsequent state and federal reporting. Attendees included nonprofit directors and staff, as well as people seeking to start nonprofits.
The process to start a nonprofit can be time-consuming and confusing. Prospective nonprofits have to assess the need for their intended service, organize a board of directors, file documents with the state and federal government, draft by-laws and other policies and convince the community that their organization is viable. The Clearinghouse’s Incorporation Workshops are intended to offer a concise overview of nonprofit duties and provide attendees with the information they need to move forward. Once nonprofit leaders have attended a workshop, the Clearinghouse can match them with a pro bono attorney, who will walk them through the necessary steps and file official paperwork.
The next Incorporation Workshop is scheduled for Thursday, January 23. Click here for details and registration information.
