“[The attorneys] showed they cared about every piece of information. There was never a moment that I felt I was being judged, targeted, or misunderstood. Always open lines of communication, no matter the time, the day, the hour.” – Alice*, Former Legal Clinic Client
After a lengthy domestic violence case, Alice* received a notice to quit with a 30-day horizon when her ex-partner, who was the beneficiary of the estate where Alice lived with her children, attempted to evict her from the property.
Before this, Alice sought a restraining order against her ex-partner, which led her to find an attorney at DOVE—a law firm that specializes in domestic violence cases—to assist her throughout the process.
Once the eviction case was headed to trial, DOVE referred Alice to Lawyers Clearinghouse’s Legal Clinic Program, where she was matched with attorneys from Choate, who stepped in and handled the case from there.
The parties were able to eventually come to an agreement, which provided Alice with some monetary compensation and adequate time to find new housing.
“It was going to be a no-fault eviction, but [the attorneys] helped me prove that everything he was saying wasn’t true, and it was all out of retaliation,” Alice said. “It was really a case of domestic violence, and he was using the court system unjustly.”
Alice now lives in a new apartment and has no contact with her ex-partner. She says she’s appreciative of the Lawyers Clearinghouse and is in a much better place.
