We’re Hiring a Fall 2019 Volunteer Legal Intern!

The mission of the Lawyers Clearinghouse is to improve the lives of people facing social and economic hardship by engaging the legal community in pro bono service to nonprofit organizations and their homeless and low-income clients.

The Clearinghouse is hiring a volunteer Legal Intern for our Legal Clinic for the Homeless Program, through which we operate free legal clinics at homeless shelters in Boston. Each year, the Legal Clinic works with hundreds of volunteer attorneys to provide pro bono civil legal services to over 230 clients.

The intern will work closely with the Legal Clinic Manager to ensure the clinics operate smoothly and efficiently. The expected time commitment is approximately 10 hours per week. The intern is required to attend all legal clinics, which are held every other Friday, from 9 am-2 pm.

Responsibilities

• Plan and prepare for upcoming legal clinics.
      o Compile paperwork and ensure all necessary forms will be available.
• Help coordinate volunteer lawyers, clients, and clinic staff, to ensure the clinics run smoothly.
• Interview clients about their legal needs and reasons for accessing the clinic.
• Provide legal and community resource information to clients.
• Write case descriptions and summaries for attorneys.
• Analyze and create reports on case outcome data.
• Attend office meetings, observe and take minutes.
• Work on Board of Directors engagement
      o Compile informational reports for board members, including feedback from attorneys and clients and data about the clinics.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about public interest work and willing to ask questions and learn. Experience with poverty law subjects is a plus but is not required.
